Welcome to the website of the M-16 National Sailing
Association. We hope your visit to our website will kindle your interest
in the most beloved of all inland lakes scows. Many great sailors from
coast to coast have had the opportunity to sail this boat from the bays of
New Jersey, to the inland lakes of
the Midwest to the mighty reservoirs of the Southwest. Sailors have
learned what scow sailing is about sailing this boat.
The M-16 has always been the people's scow. From its nimble
handling and easy sailing characteristics the M has developed many of the
finest sailors yet provided fun enjoyable sailing to the family or the
most competitive of sailors. Please enjoy our website and learn more

John Applegate (LA 150) continued his impressive year by winning the
EMSD Eastern Championships at Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club August 11-12th.
Applegate pulled away from long-time rival Skip Moorehouse (LE 99) on the
second day of competition to win the event for the third time in his career
as he topped the 16 boat fleet.
Applegate
and crew, Natasha Pizzarello, finished with 8 points as they won five of the
eight races during the regatta and threw out a 4th place. They are winning
the Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association series, the Lavallette Yacht Club
Series, and won both the Fall and Spring Series hosted by Manasquan River
Yacht Club.
Moorehouse finished second in a borrowed boat. He was followed by EMSD
Commodore Tom Welsh and Jeremy Welsh (LE 11). The brothers Thorpe (T 11)
were solid once again finishing fourth while Eric Horrocks (LA12) rounded
out the top 5.
The regatta was sailed in winds that started out of
the north-west on Saturday morning and clocked right as the day progressed
and featured 10 knots dropping to 5 knots and then back to 10 as the wind
settled in after the sun broke through the clouds. Tide was a particular
factor as the wind lightened for everyone on Saturday.
Sunday
started out with an hour-and-a-half postponement at the dock, but when the
wind settled in it was classic Beach Haven with south winds increasing to 15
knots with 10-degree shifts. It was a classic drag race!
Two time defending champion Tim Faranetta (LA 5) was one of the many notable
sailors who missed the regatta due to prior commitments, as was past
champion Kurt Morton (MR 22). Maybe they are just waiting for Nationals at
LEHYC to break out their best performances.
